EU Reports 37% Reduction in Irregular Border Crossings Through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – According to preliminary data from Frontex, irregular border crossings into the European Union declined by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. Frontex documented roughly 61,000 detections at the EU’s external borders from January 1 to July 31, a figure that is compared with the same timeframe in 2025. The majority of significant migration routes experienced fewer crossings over this period. These statistics serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry activity across the EU’s external frontier.

The Eastern Mediterranean continued to be the most active route, with 20,232 detections—a 28% decrease from 28,068 in the same period last year. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, representing a 55% decline from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes accounted for approximately 60% of all detections related to EU border entries. Libya remained the primary country of departure on the Central Mediterranean route during the seven-month span.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections—up 37% from 8,175 a year prior. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025, while land detections through June totaled 2,569, rising from 1,079. The Western African route experienced a 60% reduction, with 4,682 detections, while crossings in the Western Balkan decreased by 26% to 4,910, and the Eastern Land Border fell 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean routes continue to dominate EU border detections

Separate data concerning Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom indicated another substantial decline, with Frontex recording 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU—down 46% from 41,647. These Channel figures are not included in the overall EU entry totals. Additionally, the agency reported 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, which is a 9% increase. The figures for the seven months exclude extraordinary events at the external border in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its data on preliminary EUROSUR information and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency noted that revisions to these figures could occur as authorities update their reports. It is important to recognize that the statistics count detections rather than unique individuals, meaning a person may appear multiple times after crossings at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is relevant when comparing route-specific totals with the overall number of people involved, both within the agency’s external-border dataset and in broader analyses.

Seven-month data confirms ongoing first-half decline

These latest figures build on the trend observed after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex reported more than 49,000 irregular border crossings—a 37% decrease compared to the previous year. At that time, detections on the Western Mediterranean route were 17% higher than in the same period of 2025. However, the seven-month comparison reveals that the increase is now at 37%. Meanwhile, the Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% decline through July.

Frontex reports that approximately 3,800 officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders, assisting national authorities with border management and sea rescue operations. These officers also support member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The recent data illustrate uneven route trends, with most major corridors showing significant declines alongside a rise in crossings along the Western Mediterranean route.
