EU Expands Wildfire Support Efforts Across Europe Amid Growing Crisis

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Union has activated a range of resources, including aircraft, helicopters, ground crews, and satellite imagery, in response to the escalating wildfire emergencies across Europe that are challenging emergency services. As fires continue to spread over multiple regions, Belgium and Spain have requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, leading to new cross-border deployments that complement national firefighting efforts during the intense 2026 fire season. By the end of July, the area burned across Europe had reached approximately 2.5 times the typical extent for that period, with support being provided through separate national requests rather than a continent-wide emergency declaration.

EU expands wildfire response across Europe with support
European countries expand joint wildfire response as fires strain emergency services.

In Belgium, Sweden dispatched two rescEU firefighting aircraft to assist in the efforts against the Hautes Fagnes wildfire, while Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, and additional air support from the Netherlands joined the operation. EU officials confirmed the deployment of two Dutch helicopters, with Walloon authorities listing one Dutch helicopter among the active resources late Monday. The latest EU assessment indicated that over 3,000 hectares had already burned in the Belgian fire zone, with crews from around 20 emergency zones actively engaged on the ground.

By Monday evening, the response in Wallonia involved nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles, with ground teams operating where terrain permitted, and farmers assisting by providing water supplies to firefighting teams. The fire remained confined to accessible sectors, although overnight flames advanced into areas unreachable by foot, forcing authorities to close several roads and reservoirs to ensure emergency access. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home on Monday night, though some residents of Küchelscheid were still unable to do so, reflecting the ongoing complexity of the firefighting effort.

Cross-national crews bolster firefighting efforts in Spain

In Spain, France contributed 104 ground firefighters and 36 vehicles to reinforce teams in Aragón, where nearly 16,000 hectares had already been affected when the European support was announced. The forestry authority in Aragón elevated 14 fire danger zones to red alert for August 18, a significant increase from eight on Monday, with official reports indicating the presence of very high or fully available dead fuels across central and northern regions. French firefighting units joined Spanish personnel already engaged in combating the fires across the affected areas, illustrating regional cooperation in managing the crisis.

Satellite technology continues to aid emergency services in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy by providing rapid mapping through the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. This geospatial data allows authorities to evaluate burned areas and coordinate field operations efficiently during active wildfire events. The European Commission plays a key role in facilitating cross-border assistance and funding transportation and operational costs associated with these deployments. Such satellite-supported mapping is crucial for effective response planning during natural disasters involving wildfires.

The EU’s coordinated firefighting response encompasses multiple regions

The civil protection system provides affected nations with the means to request international assistance when domestic resources are overwhelmed, with the Emergency Response Coordination Centre managing these requests, aligning offers, and supporting the deployment of personnel and equipment. As the 2026 wildfire season progresses, Europe has a joint fleet comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters, supported by a prepositioned reserve of 777 firefighters from 14 countries—including Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal—that can be mobilized during major emergencies. This reserve acts as a strategic resource pool ready for rapid deployment when needed.

In Belgium, efforts involve a combination of aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, drones, and local logistics coordinated under a comprehensive emergency response system. Meanwhile, in Spain, reinforcements from France have added personnel and vehicles to a sizable regional firefighting operation. Across Europe, satellite-based mapping continues to support national agencies handling multiple wildfire incidents simultaneously. The European Civil Protection Mechanism activates international assistance when nations submit requests through the European coordination system, a process both Belgium and Spain have recently utilized amid this wave of wildfires.
