Germany advances its counter-drone capabilities and enhances security infrastructure

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – As authorities contend with rapidly evolving unmanned aircraft technologies, Germany is ramping up its drone defense measures. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone efforts would continue to be a long-term priority for the Federal Police during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. He highlighted an ongoing technological race between defense systems and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

In December 2025, the Federal Police established its specialized counter-drone unit to handle operations nationwide. According to recent government data, this unit is currently staffed by approximately 70 personnel, with plans to expand the team to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has approved an increase from four to eight operational locations, aiming to enhance coverage and response efficiency throughout Germany.

Germany has also prioritized equipping major airports under Federal Police jurisdiction with counter-drone technology. Key airports include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has procured mobile detection and defense systems designed for deployment at aviation facilities, though specific details remain undisclosed due to security reasons. While police are responsible for drone defense within airport boundaries, state police oversee areas outside these zones.

Federal police unit broadens its reach across Germany

This expansion initiative was prompted by an August 4 security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, where federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. Evidence pointed to an intent to cause an explosion with the aircraft, and a cargo plane was also involved in a collision with an object believed to be another drone within the airport vicinity. The federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation on August 6.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the investigation under the direction of the federal prosecutor, with authorities withholding public attribution of responsibility to allow investigators to thoroughly examine the evidence. This incident has reignited discussions on safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure, as well as underscoring the importance of improved coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations involved in drone incident response.

Germany launches research hub to combat drone threats

On August 18, Germany inaugurated a new Technology Center for Drone Security located at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site, leveraging additional research facilities at its Braunschweig site. The center aims to evaluate drone detection and defense technologies under realistic operational scenarios. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs, fostering collaboration among researchers, security agencies, and commercial entities developing counter-drone solutions.

This new facility complements Germany’s existing Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which facilitates information exchange and risk assessment among federal and state authorities. Additionally, the federal police’s powers regarding drone detection and defense have been updated. Dobrindt pointed out that the pace of technological advancements necessitates ongoing development and testing of new countermeasures. The government’s current strategy integrates operational police units, coordinated security evaluations, and dedicated research to bolster Germany’s defenses against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
