Euro area reports inflation increase to 3.3% in August due to energy surge

    September 3, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation climbed to an estimated 3.3% in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July, driven largely by a sharp rise in energy prices during the month. Eurostat provided the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. The inflation rate had been 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Consumer prices increased by 0.4% from July, according to the harmonised index of consumer prices.

Euro area inflation reaches 3.3% on August energy gains
Euro area inflation rose to 3.3% in August as energy prices recorded the strongest increase.

Among the key components, energy experienced the most significant annual increase at 14.3%, rising from 10.3% in July, with energy prices also climbing 2.9% month-on-month. Meanwhile, inflation in services slowed down slightly to 3.0% from 3.3% in July. Inflation for non-energy industrial goods grew to 1.2% from 0.9%, while food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained steady at 1.2%, unchanged from the previous month.

Smaller variations were observed in measures excluding specific categories, with inflation excluding energy remaining at 2.2%, unchanged from July. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco slightly decreased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Additionally, inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food declined to 2.1% from 2.2%. These metrics track consumer price changes after removing certain components from the overall inflation index.

Energy inflation accelerates while services inflation slows

In August, inflation levels varied considerably across the 21 member countries of the euro area, with Lithuania reporting the highest estimate at 5.8%, followed by Cyprus at 5.2%, and Bulgaria at 5.1%. Spain registered 4.5%, Belgium 4.2%, and Luxembourg 4.0%. On the lower end, Estonia posted 1.3%, Malta 1.9%, and Finland 2.4%. Germany’s inflation rate stood at 2.9%, France at 2.7%, and Italy at 3.2%.

Monthly price changes also diverged across nations, with Belgium seeing a 2.1% rise, Luxembourg 1.8%, and Cyprus 1.5%. France and Bulgaria each experienced an increase of 0.8% from July. Ireland, Spain, and Malta all saw a 0.6% growth, whereas Finland reported a monthly decline of 0.4%, and Slovakia’s prices remained steady. Germany’s prices went up by 0.2%, and Italy’s rose by 0.1%.

The euro area now encompasses 21 nations

With Bulgaria’s accession on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area expanded to include 21 countries, whereas data through December 2025 reflect the previous composition of 20 member states. Starting from January 2026, figures cover the new 21-country group, with the European Union’s statistical framework applying a chain-index formula to account for the change in membership. Consequently, the August flash estimate accurately represents the current 21-member single-currency zone.

These August figures remain preliminary, with the full harmonised consumer-price data set for release on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation is scheduled for Oct. 2. The harmonised index tracks the changes in prices paid by households for goods and services, with annual inflation comparing prices to the same month one year earlier and monthly inflation measuring the difference from the previous month.
