Europe Advances Toward a Historic Year in Wind Energy Installations

    September 2, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course to achieve a record-breaking year for wind power installations after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in the first half of 2026, representing a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. According to the latest industry data published by WindEurope, the turbines commissioned during this period produce enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million European households and displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. Europe’s wind energy sector is experiencing heightened activity over the summer months, which is accelerating the continent’s energy transition and propelling it toward this historic milestone.

Europe on track for record year in wind power installations
Commercial offshore wind turbines generate clean electricity across open ocean waters outdoors.

Germany took the lead in regional expansion during the first half of 2026 by adding 3.4 GW, accounting for approximately 40% of the entire new wind power capacity across Europe. Over 500 individual turbines were brought online in Germany, including 423 onshore units and 84 offshore turbines. Other European countries such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also saw significant increases in capacity. Notably, Ukraine managed to add more than 400 megawatts (MW) of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict conditions, while Belgium contributed an additional 60 MW to its national grid.

According to WindEurope’s Autumn Report projections, the total wind capacity added across Europe by the end of 2026 is expected to reach 24 GW, setting a new record for annual installations and marking a major milestone in the sector’s growth. This expansion phase is anticipated to serve as a crucial foundation toward achieving an industrial goal of 30 GW of annual additions during the 2030s. During the first half of this year, investments in new wind farms across Europe amounted to 9 billion euros, while national governments awarded over 17 GW of capacity through competitive auctions, with an additional 26 GW scheduled for tendering before the end of the year.

Germany Tops the Region in Capacity Growth with More Than Three GW Installed

Despite these impressive figures, representatives of industry associations have cautioned that ongoing structural bottlenecks continue to threaten the sector’s long-term growth prospects. Germany, for example, advanced its deployment by granting permits for over 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity during the first half of 2026, yet permitting volumes across key markets such as Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland experienced declines. Although wind power installations are on track for a record year, industry leaders warn that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hamper future project schedules and delivery timelines.

In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope Chief Executive Officer Tinne Van der Straeten noted that 2026 might set an all-time record for wind installations; however, she emphasized that this momentum cannot be taken for granted. Van der Straeten highlighted that decisions made by governments in the coming months regarding administrative permitting procedures, the design of competitive auctions, grid infrastructure expansion, and industrial electrification will be pivotal in determining whether the sector maintains its current growth pace.

Onshore Turbines Constitute the Majority of New Capacity Additions

To sustain this growth trajectory, industry stakeholders have identified five key policy priorities for both European Union authorities and national governments, focusing on simplifying permitting processes and enhancing regional transmission infrastructure. They also called for allocating revenues from the Emissions Trading System toward industrial electrification projects and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current baseline scenarios, Europe’s total wind capacity is projected to reach 436 GW by 2030, which is expected to supply 27% of the EU’s total electricity demand.

European federal ministries and energy regulators are scheduled to review these policy recommendations during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season. Detailed data on national turbine installations and auction results will continue to be collected through official trade portals to ensure ongoing compliance with the European Union’s decarbonization goals.
