UN calls for accelerated international measures as Ebola spreads in DRC

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has issued a plea for prompt global intervention amid the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which now affects six provinces. During his address to UN member states, Fletcher highlighted that the epidemic is progressing at a rate faster than previous Ebola outbreaks and emphasized the urgent need for increased funding and humanitarian access. His appeal coincides with a surge in infections, ongoing security challenges, and mounting strain on healthcare services across eastern and northern regions of the nation.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

The World Health Organization announced on September 1 that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. Currently, the epidemic impacts 60 health zones spanning Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded and the most rapidly spreading. Ituri continues to be the primary hub of transmission, accounting for the majority of cases since the outbreak’s onset.

This outbreak involves the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus and was initially identified in May 2026. WHO has classified the situation as a public health emergency of international concern, reporting 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC as of August 26, before the total cases exceeded 6,000. The agency also documented 1,293 recoveries by that date. Efforts by health authorities persist in surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory diagnostics, clinical treatment, and engaging local communities across the affected areas.

Ongoing conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola response

The Ebola crisis is unfolding amid a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Fletcher stated that nearly 11 million individuals require aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in parts of eastern DRC has severely hampered access for health workers and relief organizations. The United Nations has expanded its response since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field efforts.

Medical personnel on the frontlines face significant dangers; Fletcher noted that over 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives due to Ebola, with attacks targeting treatment facilities and ambulances. WHO data from July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers, including 44 fatalities. Consequently, health agencies are prioritizing infection prevention, ensuring safe clinical practices, and enhancing protection for responders. WHO also indicated that ongoing transmission chains and deaths outside treatment centers continue to impede containment efforts.

Funding increases and vaccine research progress as cases escalate

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the DRC calls for $2.1 billion in funding, with $300 million allocated specifically for Ebola response activities. Fletcher urged international partners to provide more flexible and increased financial support for both the outbreak management and the broader humanitarian efforts. Separately, WHO has announced that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion, and has called on member states to expedite their contributions as the country scales up surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratory capacity, community outreach, and other vital public health measures.

On September 1, WHO also released updated guidance regarding vaccines as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The organization stated that current evidence does not definitively show whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers meaningful protection against this Ebola species in humans. As a result, it recommends administering the vaccine solely within research protocols while further clinical trials are conducted. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s efforts to respond, with ongoing efforts to identify cases, halt transmission, and safeguard communities across the six affected provinces.
