Italy Records Its Hottest Summer Since 1950 in 2026

ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – In 2026, Italy experienced its warmest summer since 1950, with an average temperature across the nation of 24.3 degrees Celsius. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy noted that this figure surpassed the previous record set in 2003, which had an average of 23.6 degrees Celsius. The summer period analyzed spans from June through August and is based on temperature measurements taken two meters above ground level. This data places the summer of 2026 at the top of Italy’s 76-year temperature record series.

Italy summer 2026 becomes hottest in records since 1950
    1. Italy’s 2026 summer heat set a national temperature record in data dating to 1950.

The month of August was particularly notable for its intense heat, with an average temperature of 25.6 degrees Celsius across the country, surpassing the August average from 1951-1980 by 5.2 degrees and also exceeding the August norm for 1991-2020 by 3.5 degrees. According to the Institute for Bioeconomy, August 2026 broke earlier monthly records of 24.6 degrees in 2024 and 24.0 degrees in 2017. The climate dataset utilized for this analysis is ERA5-Land, maintained by ECMWF.

Both July and August of 2026 are now ranked as the hottest months on record in the climate dataset, based on the institute’s heat maps. This follows a record-breaking spring, during which Italy’s national average temperature reached 12.1 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, spring 2024 also recorded that same temperature, matching its seasonal high. From January through August, every month in 2026 registered higher temperatures than the same months in 2025, extending Italy’s period of elevated temperatures throughout much of the year.

    August Sets New Temperature Milestones

Temperature anomalies in Italy during the first eight months of 2026 covered large portions of the country. Approximately 70% of Italy’s territory experienced anomalies exceeding 1 degree Celsius, while about 40% saw increases over 2 degrees. The most significant anomalies appeared in the northwestern plains and along the Apennines, regions that include extensive agricultural lands. Elevated temperatures and drought conditions impacted some farming areas during this period, with Rome, Florence, and Turin experiencing multiple heatwaves throughout June, July, and August.

The record temperatures are derived from ERA5-Land data provided by ECMWF. This dataset offers land-surface climate information dating back to 1950. Researchers have analyzed this data to compare temperature trends across Italy over the entire period. The summer of 2026, with an average of 24.3 degrees, was 0.7 degrees higher than the 2003 benchmark, while August’s 25.6-degree reading surpassed the 2024 monthly record by 1.0 degree. All measurements refer to air temperature recorded at two meters above the surface.

Extensive Evidence of Heat Across Italy

The broader Mediterranean region also faced extraordinary heat during the summer of 2026. An independent analysis, linked to Italy’s National Research Council, found that sea-surface temperatures in the Mediterranean averaged around 27 degrees Celsius in July, marking the highest July average since 1993. The study indicated that 79% of the Mediterranean Sea experienced at least one significant marine heatwave, with some regions enduring more intense events. These marine temperature measurements are separate from the land-temperature series that established Italy’s national summer record.

The record-breaking heat in Italy coincided with widespread summer temperatures across Europe. Climate assessments describe the continent as the fastest-warming region in recent decades. During the 2026 summer, parts of Europe suffered from drought and wildfires, following months where temperatures consistently exceeded those of the previous year. Italy’s hottest July and August contributed to the summer of 2026 being classified as the warmest in the ERA5-Land series since 1950, confirming Italy’s most extreme meteorological summer on record.
